Recorded HistoryThe Black Death

A pandemic across continents.

The Black Death swept through Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and Europe from 1346 to 1353. In October 1347 Genoese ships brought it to Messina in Sicily.

It killed a third to a half of Europe’s people and changed labor, faith and power. No account fixes the day it arrived.

1346–1353, placed on the scale of its era on a line leading toward now.
