ChatGPT Public Launch

Recorded HistoryChatGPT Public Launch
On 30 November 2022 OpenAI released ChatGPT to the public as a research preview. A person could type a question and read a reply from a model trained to continue a conversation. OpenAI described ChatGPT as a sibling of InstructGPT, tuned to follow instructions and to answer in dialogue, and offered the preview at no charge to anyone with an account.
It was not the first large language model, and the chat window was not a finished product, but it was the first time a system of that kind was simply available to the public. The date is that release, not the training run and not the GPT-4 announcement of March 2023.
30 November 2022, placed on the scale of its era on a line leading toward now.
