Recorded HistoryThe iPhone

On 9 January 2007, at Macworld in San Francisco, Steve Jobs announced the iPhone, describing it as an iPod, a phone, and an internet communicator in one device. There was no physical keyboard and no stylus: a 3.5-inch glass screen and a single home button were the whole interface.

The announcement is the date of this Moment. The phone was not for sale until 29 June 2007, when stores in the United States opened at 6 p.m. and the lines ran down the block. It was not the first smartphone, but its touchscreen, and the App Store that followed in 2008, set the pattern most phones adopted.

9 January 2007, placed on the scale of its era on a line leading toward now.
